Jan Schneider has long been an advocate of the rights of women and minorities. Given the exceptionally high percentage of women in the Florida 13th Congressional District, these are important issues here.
Jan supports the Equal Rights Amendment and has worked to promote the ERA in Florida.
Jan Schneider believes in privacy rights and that decisions concerning a woman’s health and reproduction should rest with the woman, her doctor and, if applicable, her religious beliefs. Jan was pleased by the recent decisions by Congress concerning the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). She also supports legislation relating to equal pay, women’s health and reproductive freedoms that our current Congressman opposes. Also, broad-based national concerns, such as preservation of Social Security as we know it, have major impact for women, and Jan has written and advocated extensively against privatization. In addition, Jan has long been a champion of the Equal Rights Amendment and has worked aggressively to promote its passage in Florida.
By contrast, our current Congressman has repeatedly contravened the interests and wishes of a majority of his constituents on issues of women and minorities. He has voted against stem cell research, funding for Planned Parenthood, lifting the international “gag rule” imposed by President George W. Bush, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and even the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Rather, our Congressman has sponsored and actively promoted legislation against reproductive freedoms
In sum, Jan has long been a strong supporter of equal rights for all. She opposes any amendments to federal or state constitutions that would abridge civil rights for any group. In addition to being a member of several advocacy groups for women, Jan has served on the Sarasota County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women and provides pro bono legal services to residents of public housing.
