SUPPORT STEM CELL RESEARCH
Yesterday, President George W. Bush vetoed legislation — his first ever use of the presidential veto — that would help to unlock the potential of stem-cell research. He thereby threatened the health and lives of millions of Americans with potentially curable diseases.
Embryonic stem cell research promises new treatments and possible cures for many debilitating diseases and injuries. They include Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, burns and spinal cord injuries. Embrionic stem cells are special, in that they are capable of forming all the tissues of the body (as distinguished from adult stem cells, which primarily produce new cells for the tissue in which they reside). Some researchers regard stem cells as offering the greatest potential for the alleviation of human suffering since the development of antibiotics.
In the Bush Administration, politics governs science – instead of the other way around. Administration bureaucrats have used pseudoscience and fake science to promote unsound policies in many areas, including climate change, alternative energy research, and medical advancement.
Stem cell research brings hope to the many Americans suffering from horrible diseases.
Please join me in asking Congress to overturn the Bush veto.
