Prevent senseless killing and wounding of Americans and others -- and restore goodwill
abroad...The current Administration lied to our country and has engaged in a sustained
pattern of lies and deceit. We must restore truth and integrity to government.
With regard to the war in Iraq, the purported justification of weapons of mass
destruction has proven false; close to 2000 Americans have been killed and at least
15,000 more wounded; and the cost to American taxpayers of the fighting in Iraq and
Afghanistan has mounted to over $350 billion. It is long past time to set benchmarks
for withdrawal. Meanwhile, our campaign is committed to increasing vigilance at home.
Congress must strengthen security for our ports, chemical plants, nuclear facilities,
and transportation systems and by supporting our first responders.
More generally, Congress should undertake a comprehensive review of United States
foreign and defense policies and capabilities in the 21st century. Much commendable
attention has been paid to reviewing homeland security and intelligence operations.
But even these broad topics must be seen as part of a comprehensive global strategy
both to protect our country and to promote the values for which we stand.
