 Jan Schneider has written two books and dozens of articles about environmental protection and preservation. She has also won several awards in this area.
 Congress must restore fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets and fair trade. Our representatives in Washington claim that the country cannot afford a basic system of healthcare or various other Social Programs that benefit all Americans. Yet in 2005 Congress passed an Energy Bill featuring $14.5 billion dollars in corporate giveaways over the next 10 years, with a majority going to traditional energy interests such as coal, oil, natural gas and utilities. In addition, the Administration and a number of Members of Congress propose to add another $2 trillion or so to the federal debt to finance an ill-advised transition to partial privatization of Social Security. Meanwhile, the economy is still not creating enough family-supporting jobs, and higher-paying jobs are being outsourced.
Of course, Jan Schneider opposes drilling off Florida coasts and in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. She welcomes the recent belated recognition of the shortsightedness of such projects. So far, however, the victory is only temporary, and Jan will remain vigilant in combating such environmentally unwise proposals in the United States Congress.
 But we also have much broader environmental concerns and initiatives. Jan Schneider will advocate legislation and other measures aimed at ensuring adequate supplies of clean air and clean water, initiating energy-saving measures, developing alternative energy sources, eliminating use of pesticides that threaten our air and water, preserving our national and international endangered species, and supporting the Kyoto Protocol instead of simply disregarding the pressing problem of global warming. Jan will fight to restore adequate funding to our National Parks Service, Fish and Wildlife Service and other programs and with environmental responsibilities. She will also seek to halt cheap grazing rights "giveaways" and the opening up of road-less areas in our national forests.
Currently, our environment is under attack by President Bush and his Republican supporters in Congress. Their agenda will leave the quality of our water and air - the quality of our lives - in the sullied hands of corporate polluters. "Regulatory agencies have run amok and need to be reformed," stated Representative Tom Delay, House Majority Whip -- just as big business lobbyists were invited to list the regulations they wanted to eliminate!
Jan Schneider knows that the environment is a national treasure and that Floridians are uniquely fortunate in this regard. Jan stands united with the people of all political persuasions in the 13th Congressional District who are committed to maintaining a healthy environment, protecting our clean air and water supplies, preserving our beautiful beaches and other amenities, and eliminating waste and abuse of natural resources.
